✦ ABILITIES
The Stare
Unbroken, unblinking observation of your wrangling form, interrupted every 2.5–6 seconds by a slow blink that somehow makes it worse.
The Hoot
Delivered every 14–55 seconds, with a small head-bob. It is not a warning. It is not encouragement. It is a hoot.
✦ FROM THE FIELD GUIDE
On the back fence, every night, sits an owl. It does not help. It does not hinder. It watches you work with enormous amber eyes, and every so often it blinks — slowly, deliberately, like a supervisor initialing a form.
Nobody knows how long it has held the post. The muertos drift past it, the wraith drifts past it, and the owl regards them all with the same round-eyed conviction that everyone here is doing their job slightly wrong. Occasionally it hoots. The hoot does not mean anything. The hoot has never meant anything. You will still wonder about it at 3 a.m.
It is, by a comfortable margin, the least dangerous thing in the graveyard, and the only one whose approval you'll find yourself wanting.
✦ HOW TO SURVIVE IT
▸You don't. You leave the owl alone and hope it approves of your form.
